Dear Congressman Berman,
The American Lebanese Community
in LA County and all over the United States
would like to express their gratitude to the
resolve you have shown in support of democracy
and freedom in the Middle East, and particularly
in Lebanon.
The introduction of H. Res. 1194
in May of 2008 solidified our belief in the
commitment of the United States Congress to the
sovereignty, independence and territorial
integrity of Lebanon’s borders.
Although dialogue with rogue
states, the Syrian regime mainly, is a matter of
lasting debate and as members of this great
democracy whose loved ones have suffered under
the hegemony of this regime, we urge you, and
your accompanying delegation, to stress to the
Syrian regime the need to:
-
Cooperate fully with UNSCR
1559, 1634, 1644, 1664, 1680, 1701 and other
pertinent resolutions.
-
Proceed with demarcation of
Syrian-Lebanese borders, starting with
Shebaa Farms.
-
Release all Lebanese
detainees in Syrians jails and intelligence
caverns.
-
Refrain from meddling into
Lebanese affairs.
-
Refrain from illegal
transferring arms to terrorist organizations
in Lebanon.
-
Fully recognize Lebanon as an
Independent State, at least, by completing
the establishment of diplomatic relations
which has been denied over the decades.
The Syrian regime’s head
repeated public statements, mainly in recent
weeks, have been a belligerent disrespect to the
international community; which strengthens our
belief that your visit will only emboldens him.
We respectfully ask that you highlight the
message that any gesture of openness towards
Syria will not come at the expense of Lebanon’s
freedom and sovereignty, and if possible, that
you to include Lebanon in your trip. Your
presence in Lebanon will provide a breath of
fresh air to a struggling young democracy.
We wish you and your delegation
a safe and fruitful visit,
God bless you and bless our
Great Nation the United States of America. |
