December 23,
2011
The Lebanese Informati
on
Center in the U.S. (LIC) applauds the U.S. Congress for its
decision to continue the U.S. assistance to the
Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), as outlined in the Consolidated
Appropriations Act of 2012.
Congress has thus
made it clear that it acknowledges the indispensable role of
the LAF in fulfilling the mission of maintaining security
and stability in Lebanon, securing Lebanon's borders,
preventing illegal arms shipments, and confronting armed
militias in accordance with the relevant UNSC Resolutions
and in the best national
interests of the United States.
The LIC has been a
staunch supporter of U.S. efforts to build and enhance the
capabilities of the LAF and has diligently advocated for the
establishment of a long-term equitable assistance program.
Furthermore, the LIC
believes that now more than ever, during these times of
unrest and radical changes in the region, it is imperative
that the Lebanese armed and security forces be trained and
equipped to counter any threat to Lebanon’s democracy,
whether originating from outside its borders or from within.
