The Hudson Institute and the Lebanese Information Center Jointly Host a Foreign Policy Discussion on Lebanon - January 5, 2007.

The Hudson Institute and the Lebanese Information Center (LIC) hosted a foreign policy discussion titled, “Keeping Lebanon’s Freedom and Democracy Alive: Can Iranian and Syrian Schemes be Stopped?” at the Hudson Institute headquarters on Thursday, January 4, 2007.  The event was attended by a large number of scholars, government officials, members of the press corps and other interested individuals.

After the welcoming and introductory remarks by Dr. Meyrav Wurmser, Senior Research Fellow at the Hudson Institute, and by Dr. Joseph Gebeily, President of (LIC), three distinguished panelists discussed the ongoing attempt to reverse the accomplishments of the Cedar Revolution by a minority of anti-democracy Lebanese groups with ties to Iran and to Syria.

Mr. Adib Farha, Senior Policy Adviser of LIC and of the American Lebanese Coalition, presented an overview of current events in Lebanon and Iran’s role, through its ally and client Hezbollah, in the ongoing counter-revolution attempt.  Mr. Tony Badran, Research Fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracy, discussed the Syrian role and its scheme to restore its suzerainty over Lebanon.  General Thomas McInerney USAF (ret.), Military Analyst for Fox News, discussed U.S. diplomatic and military options for dealing with the threat to international stability and to Lebanon’s democracy that Iran and Syria represent.

A vibrant and insightful discussion followed.
